BOTTLENECKS OF GLOBAL NUCLEAR RENAISSANCE
Abstract
The implementation of large-scale nuclear power programs in various regions of the World (nuclear renaissance) critically depends on establishing effective global nuclear safety infrastructure, including safe management of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and radioactive waste. SNF accumulation at many new nuclear sites in various countries compromises safety. New approaches are needed for SNF management. SNF should not be considered as waste. Alternative technologies, such as closed fuel cycle, are available in principle, but their implementation requires new regulations and a new system of relationships between suppliers and customers and of their responsibilities. Novel Russian nuclear technologies may be proposed for the next phase of global nuclear energy market development
